ABOUT US

WHO WE ARE

GFA is a non-profit and public benefit organisation established in 2017 to promote sustainable economic empowerment, leadership, and personal development of youth, girls and women in the STEAM, focusing on Africa’s aviation and aerospace industry.

The organisation identifies and nurtures talent (mainly in rural areas), provides mentorship and training, and leads up to exit points that deliver trained and skilled professionals into the workplace. The organisation has successfully enabled individuals to achieve their goals in the industry, including becoming aerospace engineers, flight instructors, UAV pilots and instructors, aircraft maintenance engineers, medical doctors, innovators and entrepreneurs. Our alumnae continue to thrive in their careers both locally and globally.

OUR HISTORY

In 2009, Refilwe Ledwaba, a qualified Helicopter and Aeroplane Pilot, founded Southern African Women in Aviation and Aerospace Industry (SAWIA).

Though formally established in 2009 and registered as an NPO in 2011, SAWIA was conceived in 2007 when we recognised the need for an organisation to represent women and girls in the aviation and aerospace industry in the African continent. The organisation’s initiative includes establishing the Girls Fly Programme in Africa (GFPA) Foundation, which aims to educate girls about aviation and aerospace at the grassroots level while empowering them with information and access to other women in the field, addressing one of the enablers of gender equality. GFPA’s success was so significant that it was registered independently as an NPC and PBO, prompting SAWIA to shift its focus. As part of a rebranding strategy, the organisation changed its name from GFPA Foundation to GFA in the last quarter of 2022.

our vision

To create an Africa where every girl is educated, included, and empowered.
