Medical Doctor :Dr Chrystal Mbu

Empowering women and girls and promoting gender equality is crucial to accelerating sustainable development.Ending all forms of discrimination against women and girls is not only a basic human right, but it also has a multiplier effect across all other development areas UN

Meet our Alumna, change-maker, and role model, Chrystal Mbu. She attended our aviation and aerospace technology camp in high school in 2014.

The camp experience was great and well-rounded. We did many fun Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) related activities, which sparked my interest in all things STEM-related. I was inspired to see women who are confident game changers and are not afraid to reach for their dreams. We were privileged to have fantastic camp leaders who offered guidance even after the camp .

In grade 11, Chrystal realized that she wanted to be someone who uses STEM to make a positive impact around the world, and after research, she decided that medicine would be a starting point. After Matric, she enrolled in the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) at the University of Pretoria. While there, she was involved in community work, volunteering at two girls’ homes/shelters in Pretoria. Now a qualified Doctor, Crystal aims to specialize in either General or Orthopedic Surgery and continue to make a tangible impact in her community.

Women make up part of the population, and we, too, have much to offer. A society that does not empower females is a society that is not using all its resources and will therefore struggle to do better.”when we asked why it is essential to empower girls.

Chrystal also said that camps such as the GFA camps give girls from different backgrounds opportunities and experiences they would have otherwise not had. It also opens doors to countless opportunities, amazing friendships, and a positive shift in mindset. She advises young girls to

Dream big, set goals, and work hard. You are worthy of every opportunity you’re given; you are good enough to occupy the most influential seat in the room. Our time is now, our rights, our future
