FUTURE AIRPORT DESIGN

We are thrilled to announce an exciting opportunity for high school students to collaborate in teams to design a future airport. This program consists of three phases and includes informative workshops and comprehensive resources to support participants throughout the process. These workshops, led by experienced professionals, will cover topics such as environmental design and urban planning. Additionally, guest speakers from the aviation industry will share valuable insights and real-world applications of design principles. Participants will also have access to state-of-the-art design software and engineering tools through partnerships with local educational institutions and companies. Outstanding prizes will be awarded to the top three teams, with special recognition for the winning team.

Phase 1 – Closing date: 30 April 2026

  KEY PARTNERS

DESIGN OBJECTIVES

  • Apply concepts in aerodynamics, structural integrity, and materials science in their designs.
  • Promote innovative ideas that reduce ecological impacts and enhance energy efficiency within aerodrome operations.
  • Challenge participants to consider the aerodrome’s integration with surrounding communities and urban infrastructure, with a focus on accessibility and transport links.
  • Foster a spirit of collaboration among team members, emphasising the importance of diverse skill sets and ideas.

PARTICIPATING CRITERIA

  • The competition is open to high school students in Gauteng, the Western Cape, and Limpopo
  • Each team can consist of a maximum of five learners, accompanied by no more than two educators.
  • It is important to note that each school may register only one team for this event, ensuring a fair and organised competition among participating schools.

JUDGING CRITERIA

  • Creativity – Uniqueness and originality of the design concept.
  • Feasibility – Practicality and realism in the proposal, including adherence to engineering standards and budget considerations.
  • Adherence to the Theme: How well the design aligns with the competition’s objectives and emphasis on sustainability.
  • Presentation: Clarity and professionalism of the submission, including visual appeal and organisation of ideas.
  • Potential Community Impact: Assessment of the design’s potential benefits to local communities, job creation, and economic stimulation.

SUBMISSION FORMAT

PHASE 1

Schools interested in participating in the project should begin by submitting a formal application. This involves completing the designated forms, which require basic information about the school and the team participants. In addition, each team must include a brief overview of their design concept, outlining the initial ideas, objectives, and inspiration behind their project. This overview should provide insight into the team’s vision and expectations for their aerodrome design.

Phase 1 Closing date – 30 April 2026

PHASE 2 – DIGITAL SUBMISSION

  • Teams should create digital representations of their designs in either 3D modelling software (such as SketchUp, AutoCAD, or similar tools).
  • Each submission should include annotations explaining key features and innovative aspects of their designs.

PHASE 3 – PHYSICAL MODEL

  • The last three teams will be invited to complete their physical models in Johannesburg.
  • This may involve scale models crafted from materials such as cardboard, foam board, or recyclable materials, highlighting the practical viability of their ideas.
